Babel by R.F.Kuang

”Verbum e verbo ve sensum e sensu” – ”Word from word and sense from sense”

  • Babel

What is the translation? If there was a sentence that summarizes Babel, the sentence would be this question. In this book R.F.Kuang explained the translation with some other subquestions. For instance, is there a possibility to translate a word from one language to another without any loss of meaning ? In my understanding, ı think that she answers this question with giving our point of view character (Robin) as an example. Since, throughout the book we observe how Robin loses himself after he changed his name from chinese to english. As a result, to find himself he must lose his identity. In addition, we also observe how education of a nation from young age can make people prejudice the other people of nation. In a word this book was very heartbreaking for me and if the experience of such a bond of friendship, new type of magic (silver) amaze you. I think that you should give a try to this book.

"Language was the only difference. It was a thousand different ways of seeing and exploring the world. No, a thousand worlds in one world. And translation, however futile, was a necessary effort to navigate among them."
